When we got married, we started renovating an old metal shop building that was just used for storage to make into our home. It had 2 garage doors and a dirt floor. We've got it all closed in now, took out the garage doors, the concrete is poured, and all of the interior walls up! Now we are finishing up the electrical, plumbing, & insulating. I'm very excited to finish it and hoping it goes by much faster than the 3 years it took to build the tiny house! We had a few friends over and they helped sheet rock the ceilings. We are doing a cathedral ceiling in the bedroom. The living room, dining, & kitchen will all be open and we are going to put dark stained reclaimed fence boards all along the ceiling with exposed rafters. In the bedroom we are doing a herringbone wall made out of reclaimed fence boards (some stained & some natural). I'm LOVING it so far!! We recently put the front door up, stained some wood siding, & wired in porch lights! It's definitely coming along! My goal is to be able to move into the house by this Summer.
We'll see.... :) Thanks for reading! -Mikayla

Hello friends! Thanks for stopping by to read my first blog post on Herrmann Homestead! I'm gonna start off with telling you guys the story of how of this all started... A few months ago we went to an local auction to support the FFA kids and they auctioned off an award winning goat. Hardly anyone was bidding so the price lowered & lowered. Surprisingly, Samuel turns to me and quickly asked, "Do you want a goat?!" but by the time I had registered what he was asking me, the goat had already sold. I was pretty shocked he had asked me that and also disappointed we didn't bid! It sold so cheap! So I went up to the man who won and offered him double the amount he had paid. He refused my offer and that night I went home and could not stop thinking about it...how neat would it be to own a goat! ...It would be fun right?? After weeks of thinking about it, Samuel and I talked and both agreed we should buy a goat of our own. So the goat shopping extravaganza began. I had done so much research, contacted craigslist & facebook ads, and even went to a livestock auction, but didn't have much luck. Then one day, I found a farmer's craigslist ad for two 9 month old Nigerian Dwarf nannies and contacted him.Everything was working out! We met up with him and hauled them home.
One was named Chocolate Chip & the other was Cow. They were so cute! He informed us that they were exposed to a male fainting goat and could be pregnant but he didn't think they were.....(more on that later). He also told us they were very spoiled and friendly (perfect, just the kind we are looking for!) but when we brought them home and tried to pet them, we realized maybe they weren't as friendly as we had hoped. They ran from us and just acted scared. Understandable since we were new people in a new place and they had just spent 2 hours on the road. But days had passed and they acted the same. So I did MORE research and found out they like it when you sing to them! How weird! I am NOT gonna be one of those crazy old farm ladies, singing to my goats! Instead I thought I'll just go out here everyday for multiple hours and try to pet them and just sit with them and get them to like me. Days passed and I thought, what the heck, I have a song stuck in my head, it's just me and them.....I'll try it just once. So I did. Y'all...The craziest thing happened. I started singing and they both came right up to me and let me pet them! They still aren't as friendly as I'd like for them to get but it's definitely a good start. So guess what, I have turned into the crazy old farm lady I originally didn't want to be LOL! But hey, do whatever works and never say never! -Mikayla { Herrmann Homestead } |
